The PIXEurope initiative plans to invest around 400 million euros and is part of the European Chips Strategy. The goal of the pilot line is to boost the production and innovation of photonic chips, which are crucial for various high-tech applications, in areas such as telecommunications, artificial intelligence, image sensing, automotive or mobility.

SAL will especially contribute with its specialized expertise in photonics technology and thin-film development, along with advanced manufacturing capabilities. The overall goal of SAL is to ensure robust fabrication processes and efficient technology transfers to the industry.

“We are proud to play a key role in this visionary European photonics pilot line, leveraging our expertise in integrating cutting-edge electro-optic materials, such as lithium niobate and aluminum nitride thin films, with advanced microfabrication techniques,” says Dr. Mohssen Moridi, Executive Senior Director at Silicon Austria Labs. “By driving innovation in hybrid PIC technologies, we aim to unlock new possibilities and applications, supporting Europe's establishment as a global epicenter for PIC ownership, design, and manufacturing excellence.”

Now that the consortium has been finally selected by the European Commission, the pilot line consortium will enter technical & financial discussions.
