This R&D project aims to develop an innovative laser ignition system for rocket engines by integrating a customized high power laser source together with the required laser control electronics into a single compact and robust unit. The system shall support multiple optical fibre outputs, enabling selective, ablative ignition at different engine locations through detachable fibre connections.
Key project goals include achieving reliable and efficient energy coupling to the ablative targets under the specified operating conditions, reducing system size and weight compared to conventional ignition technologies, improving maintainability through modular fibre interfaces, and enabling flexible integration into various propulsion systems. Additional objectives include resistance to vibration and thermal loads.
Expected results
- Development of a compact integrated laser ignition unit combining laser source and control electronics in a single housing.
- Demonstration of reliable energy coupling to multiple, detachable optical fibre connections, suitable for ablative ignition.
- Reduction in system mass, volume, and maintenance effort compared to conventional ignition systems.
- Demonstration of stable operation under engine test bench conditions, including vibration, temperature, and pressure loads.
- Creation of a scalable and flexible ignition platform suitable for different engine architectures and future aerospace applications.
